There has been a lot happening behind the scenes at Ojewellery recently, but one development I am particularly excited about is the growth of Illustrated in Silver by Ojewellery.
What began with a small number of engraved designs has steadily evolved into a much wider collection of animals, birds, flowers, meaningful symbols and personal keepsakes, all translated into recycled sterling silver.
For me, it brings together several things I particularly enjoy about jewellery design. There is the original illustration, the precision involved in developing the engraving, the transformation of that design into silver, and finally the hands on processes that turn it into a finished piece of jewellery.
The result is something I think of as a miniature illustration preserved in precious metal.

What is Illustrated in Silver by Ojewellery?
Illustrated in Silver is the signature engraved silver collection at Ojewellery.
Each piece begins with an original design. The expression of an animal, the shape of a flower, the texture of feathers or fur and the depth within a landscape all need to work at a very small scale before the illustration can be translated successfully into silver.
The designs are then engraved into recycled sterling silver using precision engraving technology. Once the engraving is complete, there is still plenty to do. The pieces are finished, cleaned and prepared individually before becoming the jewellery you see in the finished collection.
It is a process that combines modern technology with much more traditional jewellery making and finishing skills.

Inspired by animals, wildlife and the natural world
One of the parts I have enjoyed most has been seeing just how many directions the collection can take.
Wildlife and nature have become a particularly important part of Illustrated in Silver.
The collection now includes British birds and wildlife, woodland animals, farmyard designs, ocean life, flowers, insects and animals from further afield.
There are detailed robins, wrens and kingfishers, alongside foxes, hares, stags, hedgehogs and squirrels. Other designs range from bees and butterflies to elephants, giraffes, whales and octopuses.
Each presents a different design challenge.
A stag needs to feel strong without losing the fine detail of the antlers. A bird needs enough feather texture to have character without becoming visually crowded. An animal's expression can change completely with the smallest alteration to an eye, ear or line of the face.
Those small decisions are part of what makes developing the collection so enjoyable.

A growing collection for dog lovers too
Dogs have become another rapidly growing part of Illustrated in Silver.
Different breeds have such distinctive shapes and expressions that I want the jewellery to capture more than simply the outline of a dog.
From Labradors and Dachshunds to Patterdale Terriers, Chihuahuas, French Bulldogs and other much loved breeds, I am gradually developing a collection that celebrates some very different characters.
Customer requests often influence what I work on next. In fact, new Illustrated in Silver designs regularly begin because somebody has asked for an animal, flower or idea that they have struggled to find represented elsewhere. That customer influence has become an important part of how the collection develops.
For some people these pieces are simply a celebration of the animal they love. For others they become something much more personal, particularly when the reverse is engraved with a name or message.

One of my favourite things about the collection is that the illustration on the front does not have to be the end of the story.

From an illustration to something you can hold
My earlier career was in mechanical design engineering, so developing an idea into a physical object has always been something I enjoy.
There is quite a lot of that thinking within Illustrated in Silver.
The first drawing is only the beginning. I need to consider proportion, engraving depth, texture, contrast and how the detail will translate onto a relatively small piece of silver.
Then comes the part I still find particularly satisfying.
Watching the engraving gradually reveal the image.
After that comes cleaning, finishing, fitting the jewellery components, checking the piece and finally preparing it for its new owner.
That combination of precision and making is probably why this particular collection feels so naturally Ojewellery to me. My design engineering background continues to influence the way the jewellery develops, particularly around precision and proportion.
Jewellery designed to become a keepsake
Ultimately, Illustrated in Silver is still built around the same idea as the wider Ojewellery collection.
Jewellery can hold meaning long after the moment when it is given.
Sometimes that meaning is obvious. It might contain someone's name, a date or a personal message.
Sometimes it is much quieter.
A robin might remind someone of a person. A Labrador might represent years spent with a much loved dog. A birth flower might mark the arrival of a child. A wave might represent strength or a significant journey.
That is why I want Illustrated in Silver to keep evolving.
There are always more stories, animals, flowers and ideas that can be brought into silver.

There are more animals to draw, more flowers to develop and more ways to personalise the pieces.
And I am quite happy for Illustrated in Silver to continue evolving that way.
